SECC Newcomer Youth Group Visits Amherstburg Freedom Museum

On March 14, SECC Newcomer Youth program visited the Amherstburg Freedom Museum. Staff of the museum provided an educational tour through the Nazrey A.M.E. Church and the Taylor Log Cabin, both being important landmarks of the underground railroad and an important destination for American Freedom Seekers.

This exhibit teaches a vital piece of our history and it was a great experience for our youth and staff. We are excited to plan more field trips in the future!

“I learned more about Black History on this trip than I ever have in school. Many people think that slavery and racism only exists in America and try to cover up what has happened in Canada. Being in that church, where many slaves seeking freedom would go to be safe, brought up a lot of emotions. It was a great trip and I loved the experience!” – Zarria Augustine
