SECC Board Approves Land Acknowledgment

The SECC Board of Directors has recently approved a Land Acknowledgement to be used at SECC in order to recognize the traditional territory of the Indigenous people who called this land home. This Land Acknowledgement was created in consultation with the Caldwell First Nation. “SECC Board, Staff, and Volunteers are committed to continued learning and reconciliation,” states Executive Director, Carolyn Warkentin. “This land acknowledgement is our public commitment to learning more and being active participants in reconciliation. It will be used at all SECC meetings, workshops, trainings, and more.”

We acknowledge that we are on land and surrounded by water that is the traditional territory of the Caldwell First Nation. We recognize and respect the First Nations who have been stewards of this land since time immemorial. Our acknowledgement of the land is a declaration of our collective responsibility to this place and its peoples’ histories, rights and presence. We commit ourselves to learning more so that we can be partners in stewardship and reconciliation.

To support staff’s learning, SECC has partnered with Caldwell First Nation to deliver new training for staff. “This training was the most requested training on our internal Diversity, Equity and Inclusion survey, and we are very excited to present this to staff,” shared Manager of Human Resources, Jennifer Moore. “This training will provide staff with information on Indigenous peoples, the reality of Residential Schools and genocide, Truth and Reconciliation and how we can work together in this community to ensure we are providing appropriate and respectful services to our clients. We are excited for this training in late January.”
