Literacy Outreach Worker

Term:  Part-time – Contract (35 hours per week) – Three positions

Program Locations: Norfolk County and Leamington, Ontario

Duration: 8 weeks

Start date: Will vary between mid-June to early July depending on the position.

To be eligible, youth must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Frontier College is a national, non-profit literacy organization which was founded in 1899. We believe literacy is a right. We work with volunteers and community partners to give people the skills and confidence they need to reach their potential and contribute to society.

We are seeking a mature and dedicated individual to develop and deliver literacy supports within Norfolk County as well as Leamington, Ontario. Our programs will include literacy and English language classes for Seasonal Agricultural Workers and literacy and numeracy programs for elementary school children. Applicants should possess a keen interest in community development work and/or literacy and teaching to fill the position.  Programs will be delivered online and in-person. All programs will be delivered in accordance with public health guidelines. Staff will work throughout the summer to deliver literacy supports to workers and community partners in the Norfolk and Leamington areas. Outreach Workers will explore program delivery and resource sharing via the following avenues:

  • online facilitation via Zoom or Microsoft Teams
  • social media
  • online apps
  • and/or the delivery of learning activity kits
  • In-person at libraries and other community sites

Overall Accountability

These positions are part of Frontier College’s Southwestern Ontario regional team and report to the Outreach Program Coordinator.  The Literacy Outreach Workers will work independently and collaboratively to deliver literacy programs to Seasonal Agricultural Workers and children in the Norfolk and Leamington areas.  As the Literacy Outreach Worker, you will represent Frontier College in these regions throughout the duration of the contract.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Identify and contact potential program sites.
  • Review past program reports to determine the impact, strengths, and areas to improve.
  • Work with Frontier College staff to design and deliver an engaging, educational program for Seasonal Agricultural Workers as well as elementary age children.
  • Participate in regular team meetings.
  • Instruct on-line or in-person classes depending on public health requirements.
  • Post educational material on social media.
  • Communicate regularly with learners.
  • Where needed, create, and deliver learning activity kits.
  • Liaise with program partners including libraries, farmers, community organizations, and other community members to ensure effective program delivery, and to deal with issues as they arise.
  • Track learner attendance.
  • Collect feedback from learners and program partners including pictures and testimonials.
  • Conduct a brief evaluation of the program and prepare a detailed final report for use by Frontier College and program funders.

Skills, Attributes, and Requirements

  • Candidate must be able to work evenings and weekends as required.
  • A valid driver’s license, and access to a vehicle is essential.
  • Teaching/Tutoring experience
  • Some post-secondary education
  • Experience with community development and volunteer organizations
  • Experience working with multi-cultural populations
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft office suite, Excel, social media platforms, and hosting meetings on Zoom
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Excellent judgment and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work to high standards unsupervised and to take initiative
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to be flexible in different teaching environments, including online instruction
  • Proof of full COVID vaccination will be required to do in-person work with Frontier College, and all successful applicants will need to complete a police record check

Additional Assets

  • Ability to speak Spanish
  • Experience working with English Language Learners
