Security CheckSecurity Check

Provides seniors, the frail elderly, persons convalescing, persons with disabilities, and lonely or isolated persons with scheduled telephone calls to promote their safety and well-being while also providing a link to other services that promote safe, independent living.

Security Check provides isolated persons or those with Alzheimer's disease or other dementias with regular contact to determine that the person is not in crisis or at risk of harm.

Security Check aims to:
  • Enhance the ability of persons served to better manage their isolation; and
  • Enhance the safety of the person served
Regular telephone calls serve as a check to ensure persons served are safe, to assure them that they are not alone, that others care and that they are part of our community, and allow peace of mind for family members who are not always willing or able to contact the person served.

Who Might Use this Service?

Security Check is for seniors, or for disabled or convalescing adults living in Leamington, Kingsville or Wheatley who:
  • Live alone or are not in regular contact with friends, family or neighbours; or
  • Are fearful for their own safety and well-being; or
  • Require assistive devices such as a wheelchair, walker, cane and are prone to falling; or
  • Have one or more health or medical conditions that contribute directly or indirectly to sensed loneliness or isolation

Cost

There is no cost for this service.

New Volunteers Welcome!

Calls are made by a network of caring and dedicated volunteers. If you would like to brighten the day of a lonely or isolated person and have a few minutes every morning, we want to hear from you. We provide full training and on-going support. Call (519) 322-3536 for more details.

How it Works

Everyday at a prearranged time, volunteers phone persons on service to check on their well-being. Calls are typically five minutes in length but may vary depending on the needs of the person served, or if the volunteer determines that the person may be in distress.

When a person cannot be reached or it is determined that they are in need of assistance, the volunteer contacts a designated staff member at South Essex Community Council's Community Home Support Services department who then contact the person's emergency contacts or local emergency authorities to go and check in on the person served.
