Applications
Applications are often used to screen people out before businesses receive many more applications than they have job openings for. Don’t let yourself get screened out!
A good application may mean the difference between getting an interview and not getting one.
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN FILLING OUT AN APPLICATION FOR EMPLOYMENT:
Be business-like and make a good impression.
Dress as if you were going to an interview.
The first person you meet is very important and may determine who will (or will not) get an interview - be polite to everyone you meet.
Personal appearance counts - pay attention to your hair, nails, clothes, shoes, etc.
Always go alone.
It is
illegal for an employer to ask for information regarding place of
birth,
nationality, race, colour, religion,
sexual orientation, citizenship or for a
photograph. –
READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS AND FOLLOW THEM EXACTLY.
READ ALL QUESTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE ANSWERING ANY.
Take your
time - you will not be judged on how quickly you can fill out the
application
Always PRINT and use a PEN.
Fill in
EVERY space - if a question doesn’t apply to you, use a dash (-)
or use N/A which means
“not applicable”.
Make sure
to provide accurate names, dates and telephone numbers when
required.
If
there
is a space asking for wage/salary expected, write “open” or
“negotiable”.
DOUBLE
CHECK FOR SPELLING AND GRAMMATICAL ERRORS - if you make a
mistake, ask for a
new application.
If there
is a section for other/additional information, use it to talk about
your strengths, skills, personal
qualities, or how your personal goals are
related to
this job.
Use
a
DATA CARD - a sample application or card that contains all the
information you will likely
be
asked to provide on an application, such as the
names, addresses and telephone numbers of
present and past
employers
and references,
dates of employment, reasons for terminations and job
duties.
REMEMBER: AN APPLICATION IS A SAMPLE OF YOUR WORK
HABITS AND PRODUCTS. IT IS A REFLECTION OF WHAT KIND
OF EMPLOYEE YOU WILL LIKELY BE.
